Bits and Pieces – January 21, 2011

This is an ad hoc page of bits and pieces I found on the web.  This posting is mainly cycling related but can including hiking or other related titbits. My thanks to Treadly and Me and Professor Bob Jensen for the idea for this posting.

We join you, alongside your armoured car. All we ask is that you have a care and treat us as legitimate road users, as the law demands. Yes, sometimes we impede you, and remind you how vulnerable people really are. From the lounge-room comfort of your relatively massive, immensely powerful conveyance, our presence may be irritating, even enraging, now that the obesity epidemic has spread to our roads and made them more crammed than ever. But at least we’re skinny. Yes, the lurid and lycra-clad are gallingly swift, nimble and fit. Worse still, they appear to be having fun. Little wonder our numbers are growing. Best just relax, get used to us, and realise that the promise of freedom and fun on the roads is a fantasy — unless you’re on a bike. And in return we’ll try to ride as safely as conditions allow. – Andrew Henrick
