Bolshie biker blasts blitz reads the headline in the Fremantle Herald

It seems that I am a “bolshie biker”, well that is the headline the sub-editor at the Fremantle Herald recently gave an “letter to the editor” that I fired off in haste a few weeks ago.  My letter to the editor came of the move by the WA Police in Fremantle to implement a “blitz on cyclists.” You can read more about my views on that blitz in my blog posting.

Fremantle Herald SignGetting back to my letter to the editor. It hadn’t got published for a couple of weeks and I assumed it didn’t as I well and truly had exceeded the two hundred word limit for letters to the editor. Not surprising really given my verbose writing style.  Well on February 18, 2012 I reevied an email about my article in the paper. My article? Yes my article. It seems that the Fremantle Herald had pulbished my letter after as a “thinking allowed” piece in the paper. I got a whole page too! 🙂

SO there you go, my little piece of advocacy in the main stream news. I just hope it had some small positive impact on people’s thinking. If you wish to read the article I have a scanned copy available here.

Thanks. It was a bit of a shock to me as well as I had forgotten all about it.

    Great article.

Although I agree with what you were saying I also have to comment that there ARE a lot of idiots on bikes out there riding along footpaths at night without lights and wearing dark clothes etc who are a danger to themselves and everyone around them; especially unwitting pedestrians and other cyclists!

Should this be an issue for the Police to blitz? Maybe. Maybe not. It’s more of an education and training issue. A lot of these people don’t realise that it is dangerous and illegal to be riding a bicycle in such a manner.. no one has taught them good habits (and let’s face it, this isn’t surprising given how auto-centric we are here in Aus).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Karl and I think we are on the same page. My point or what I was trying to get across was about the return from the blitz on cyclists when pedestrians are ignored (apparently the Coroner’s data suggests a pedestrian fault rate of up to 80% in deaths from incidents involving motorists) and where the incidents involve cyclists v. motorists data suggests a similar fault rate for motorist. Seems to me we are missing the boat here.

For sure cyclists break the rules but cyclists don’t generally kill people. I would like to see good laws and actions that protect the most vulnerable here: Pedestrians and cyclists rather than a blitz on cyclists for the sake of it.

The incident this week with the speeding cyclist in a school zone is an example of the wrong focus in my view. One cyclist’s stupid behaviour gets a heck of a reaction yet 1,270 motorists where caught driving carelessly in school zones over a six month period … no reaction to the article to in the West Australian about that. Let me repeat that: 1,270 motorists versus one evil cyclist. Where is the risk to our children? Going by the reaction, cyclists. I just don’t understand that.

And yes I agree … good quality education programs are a must. The ORS needs to focus on more than just speed.

Agreed 100%. I said a similar thing in the ACF thread on the speeding cyclist thread. Amazing how many angry people there are spilling bile about this guy yet I see inattentive, dangerous, speeding motorists driving SUVs in school zones on a daily basis!

I just don’t get the hated thing at all.

Blast you criminal cyclists…taking those overworked police away from the suburbs, why arn’t they tracking down the break and enter swine in the suburbs, tell my grandmother that they are to busy “cracking down on cyclists”, after her 3rd breakin in 18 months, “cracking down on cyclists”, give me a break… Where have all the real coppers gone..
