Canon MX340 Printer Pause/Offline Error – Mac Wireless Connection

A non-cycling post but I hope a useful one for others experiencing the printer is paused or the printer is offline error message when using a Canon MX340 wirelessly with a Macintosh [MacBook Pro in my case].  This is a known problem but little in the way of a solution was out there so I am posting this advice which I received from Canon Australia. I have followed the procedure recommended and so far it is working okay. Hopefully it is of help to you. If it is or you have tweaks please post a comment below.

The support solution from Canon Australia was to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver and software as per the following steps:

Confirming your Operating System Version

  1. Click Apple (icon)
  2. Click About this Mac

[Not sure the point of this step]

Delete the Printer

  1. Click Apple (icon)
  2. Click System Preferences
  3. Double click on Print & Fax
  4. Click Canon Printer
  5. Click (-) to delete the printer

Uninstall Printer driver and Software from Hard Drive

  1. Click Go
  2. Click Computer
  3. Click on your Hard Drive
  4. Click Library
  5. Click Printers
  6. Click Canon – Move all the Canon files into Trash

Uninstalling from Download Folders

  1. Click Go
  2. Click Applications
  3. Click Downloads
  4. Click Canon – Move all canon files into Trash

[I found I didn’t have a Canon folder so just moved all Canon related files I could find into the Trash]

Open the Trash and Select Empty Trash

Repair Disk Permissions

  1. Click Go
  2. Click Utilities
  3. Double click on Disk Utilities
  4. Click on your Hard Drive
  5. Click on Repair Disk Permission – Please note: this can take several minutes

Restart the MAC

Click on this link to download the latest version of the MX340 series CUPS printer driver.  In my case as I have Snow Leopard 10.6.4 installed I downloaded MX340 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.30.3.0.

We recommend you to save it on your desktop first, once the driver is downloaded, select run to install it.

Restart the computer again, then go through Add printer and the steps to do this is as follow:

  1. Click “Apple icon”
  2. Select “System Preferences”
  3. Then go to “Print & Fax”
  4. Click on ( + ) button, the “Add printer” box will show
  5. Select “More Printer” then click on MX340 printer series and the click “ADD”

[In 10.6.4 there is no “More Printer” option and hence initially no printer shows.  I turned on my printer and this then allowed the MacBook Pro to detect the printer. I selected the second printer option (not Bonjour) as my default.]

Print a test page to make sure it’s print wirelessly.

Download the rest of the relevant software (Example: Scanner Driver, MP Navigator, Easy Photo Print etc.) and follow the same process.

[I haven’t bothered with this stage at this point]

Restart the computer again once the whole installation process is completed.

If all else fails Canon Australia support can be contacted at 131383, option 2 and then option 2 and ask/insist that you speak to a Macintosh specialist (pretty critical it seems].

    Thanks for posting this info. I will add that I’ve had nothing but trouble with my Canon printer and will never buy another one. Every time I restart my computer I have problems connecting. Canon is great about getting back to me, but the answer is always the same, go here and there and delete all these files, then reinstall the driver. I’m tired of deleting and reinstalling. I’m asking for my money back. And I thought other Mac users out there who may land upon your page might like to know in case there’s still time to take theirs back too.

    I want to thank you for this post! I’ve been so frustrated that every time I try to print I get a pause or offline error message, even though, as far as I knew, all my software was up to date. I’ve only printed a couple of times since I followed these instructions, but so far so good!

    From Abbotsford, BC, Canada here. After months of frustrations, and no help from Canon or Apple (MacBook pro here), your blog post pointed the way to the answers. A caution to others, Aushiker’s download is for Aus and NZ only. I tried the Canada one but wasn’t so lucky – didn’t seem to install. I went back to the original install disk, and now I have it all working wirelessly. I think the network selectors were stuck on, and until I cleared those out, nothing happened. I had to move things to trash and empty a couple of times, because certain elements declared they were still in use, but once I emptied and restarted they had nothing to be used on. So, then I could trash them, empty and restart. Thanks so much for sharing and helping!

      Thanks for the update with regards downloading and I am glad to hear my experience has helped you. Frustrating the way Cannon has treated its Mac customers for sure.
