I had wondered way back when I first tried them, why my Ortlieb Classic Rollers panniers would not properly fit my Tubus Tara Lowrider. The lower hook had no where to connect to the rack, so I had resorted to a couple of tie downs to hold the pannier in tight. I rode the Esperance to Perth tour like this.Well, a discussion on the Australian Cycling Forums led me to posting a photo of my set-up. Well, it didn’t take long for it to be pointed out I had the Tubus Tara Lowrider on back to front! Duh!
So a quick bit of work over the weekend and the Tubus Tara Lowrider is now facing the right way and guess what? The panniers fit properly as well.
Well sort of, the Ortlieb QL1 anchoring hook is stressed by the 14 mm bars of the Tubus Tara Lowrider so I will need to replace the hook with a Ortlieb QL 1 16 mm oversize anchoring hook, the E110.
Tubus Tara Lowrider with Ortlieb Sports-Packer Plus panniers
I mentioned above the need to replace the Ortlieb QL1 anchoring hook with a Ortlieb QL 1 16 mm oversize anchoring hook, the E11o and had I kept my Ortlieb Front Roller Classic panniers I would have taken this step.  However given my experience with the Ortlieb Bike-Packer Plus panniers on the rear of my Surly Long Haul Trucker and on the Extrawheel Voyager trailer I decided to go with the Ortlieb Sports-Packer Plus panniers on the front in combination with the Tubus Tara Lowrider pannier rack.  The Sports-Packer Plus mount much better as can be seen from the photos below. One aspect that is important is to position the anchoring hook so that the panniers do not ride forward under braking and also position to keep clear of the frame.
In response to the requests below in the comments section I have updated this posting to reflect the mounting of the Ortlieb Sports-Packer Plus panniers.
