More Christmas presents arrived this week, that is more components to update my touring bikes, the Surly Long Haul Trucker and the Giant XTC 2 mountain bike. The Surly goes all electric, well it gets a dynamo hub and lights and the XTC 2 gets to swing, a Tubus Swing front rack.
First the update to the Giant XTC 2. One problem I found on my last tour with the bike was that the weight was distributed in favour of the rear which meant the front was lifting up easily, way to easily on the single track for my liking and skill level. So to get a better weight distribution and to hopefully resolve the issue, I have purchased a Tubus Swing suspension front rack. It will be interesting to see how this works out.
For the Surly Long Haul Trucker I have now updated the lightening to a dynamo based system. This will also be used via a PedalPower Super-i-Cable to charge electronics on the road. The system consists of a SON 28 dynamo laced to a 36 spoke Mavic A719 rim using DT Swiss Competition 2.0/1.8/2.0 mm spokes (288 mm long).
For the front light I have chosen a Busch & Mueller Lumotec IQ Cyo Senso Plus without reflector, model 175QCSNDi
and for the rear light a Busch & Muller Toplight Line Plus, model 323ALT. I will mount this light to rear of my Tubus rack.
As I purchased the components from Starbike.com in Germany I had them build the front wheel as well. The cost of the build was $AU26.00.
In addition to the lightening update I also picked up a Rixen & Kaul KLICKfix handlebar adapter (mount) for my Ortlieb handlebar bag. By all reports the KLICKfix takes a better approach to mounting than Ortlieb so hopefully this will work out.
Finally I also picked up a Park Tool SW-1 Spoke Wrench for the tool box.
All up I am very happy with Starbike.com’s service. They where able to track down a Tubus Swing for me even though Tubus appear to have stopped manufacturing them. Postage was reasonable, they even deduct the 19% German VAT from the postage charge! Postage was via DHL with tracking. It took about two weeks from shipping date. Starbike.com also kept me informed through the whole process with regard to the delays and changes to the order. Will use them again for sure.
