Introduction

This is a very picturesque walk in the lower Chittering Valley north of Perth.  Julimar Brook is a dominant Wandoo area which provides very open country to walk through.  This is an ideal area to walk in late winter and/or spring once the wildflowers are out.

The walk is approximately 75% on track with the off-track section through Wandoo country following Julimar Brook.  I would rate this walk medium and would allow approximately five hours to complete. The walk is based on a walk described in Meney & Brown (1985).  These notes update the original notes.

Maps/Documentation

The required map for this area is the CALM 1: 50 000 map, Julimar, 2nd edition, published in 1986. At time of writing this map was still available in colour.

Access

The start/finish point of the walk is grid reference Julimar 292152.  Julimar Brook is approximately 60 kms north-east of Perth. To get there, follow the Great Northern Highway to Bullsbrook, turning right on Chittering Brook Road. Follow Chittering Road until reaching a t-junction (Muchea East Road/Chittering Road). Turn right, staying on Chittering Road heading towards Bindoon. Follow for approximately 11 kms before turning right on to Julimar Road.  Follow Julimar Road for approximately 13 kms. Just pass Plunkett Road ( on your right) and Heine Road (on your left) is a track off to your left. At this point you are bordering some private land (which was pine plantation). The track crosses a stream before going up hill on the boundary of Julimar Reserve and the private block. Park on this track close to Julimar Road.

Track Notes

Commence your walk at grid reference 292152. A track heads north bordering private land on the right side (cleared pine plantation).  Pick up this track crossing the creak near where you parked. Walk for 1 km before hitting a t-junction at the private land northwest border.  Turn right keeping to the track for 400 metres. At this point you will have descended to Julimar Brook.  Turn left following the brook for approximately five kilometres. It easier to walk on the west side but you find yourself crossing back and forth as you head in a general north to northeast direction. Watch for tributaries coming in on both sides. It is easy to get side tracked if not careful!

Once you reach Cooks Road (distinct road crossing the brook in a east - west direction) turn right on the road, heading east for 1.5 kms until you reach cross road marked by Reference Tree LG 74 2.  Turn right heading up the hill on the track. Keep an eye out for Reference Tree LH 74 1 and a fork in the road near an old tank. Keep to the left fork (the right fork is not marked on the map).  Further on you will descend to a creek and Reference Tree LJ 74 1.  Climb out of the creek, continuing to follow the track until a t-junction is reached.

The t-junction is marked by Reference Tree LK 74 1. At this point, again turn right following the track which borders private land on the left and reserve on the right.  Follow this track for approximately 3.5 kms crossing over the brook where you departed the track early on and climbing out of the valley to the northwest corner of the private block.  At the corner turn left, retracing the your steps back to the starting point.
