Knog Porno Patches (Refills) Owner Review

I started using Knog Porno Patches in October 2010.  I purchased them from Probikekit.com for a landed cost of AU$5.31 per packet in August 2010.  This review reflects my usage of the Porno Patches over a four month period, aka the BackpackGearTest.org approach.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

Manufacturer’s Description

I am not sure how useful this is, but this is Knog’s description of the patches:

Banned by hundreds of school councils, censored by thousands of rotary clubs and adored by millions of accident-prone nymphomaniacs. It’s proven that these saucy patches are lurking between the tube and tyre of over 90% of parish ministers’ pushies. Oh heavens, another puncture!

I purchased these patches as an alternative to Park Tool Super Patch and assumed based on the representations on the Probikekit.com website that these where packets of self-adhesive patches of a similar ilk to the Park Took Super Patch. Well they are, but they are actually refill packets for the Knog Porno Patches kit. The kit contains a critical element, a piece of sand paper, which does not come with the refill packets.  All is not lost if you add a piece of sand paper or other tool for roughing up the tyre surface to your kit.  Pretty important as I learnt that the patches do not work unless the tube surface has had the roughing up treatment first.

First Use

I have only used these myself once and helped out a fellow Audax rider with a patch once.  On the Audax ride we made the mistake of not roughing up the surface (not seeing a tool to do this I assume incorrectly that no roughing was required) and the patch didn’t hold for very long at all.

On my second attempt I did roughen up the surface and the patch appears to have stuck well.  I will update this post in a couple of months on how this patch has held.

FIELD TESTING (Two months on the bike)

I will update this blog posting in January 2011  with my experiences after two months use.

LONG TESTING (Four months on the bike)

I will update this blog posting in March 2011 with my experiences after four months use.

Actually, that patch lasted for a week or 2 and was much appreciated. I did eventually blow though and it’s interesting to know that it might be because of not roughing up the tyre first. Oddly enough the next patch, a fluid brand patch from Anaconda seems to be holding ok. Ironically I was wondering if I would hold because the tyre surface is pretty messed up now. Seems to be ok so far.

Greg: Actually the patch I gave you was a Park Tool Super Patch :). BTW it should have lasted longer than two weeks. The one I referred to in this post was leant to toofat on a more recent ride.
