Life on the Road in 2010 – Week 23

The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general.  My week runs from Thursday to Friday, so Week 23 for 2010 is from June 4, 2010 through to June 10, 2010.

Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,563 steps equals 1 km. The Challenge officially started on May 20, 2010.

Totals for the Week Total Bike Kilometres:

364 km for the week;
6,810 km for the year.

98.4 kg; Plus 1.2 kg.
Total weight loss for 2010: 4.6 kg.

BikeJournal Rankings:

Australian Cycling Forums Club – 11th. Gained two places in the rankings.

BikeJournal overall ranking – 120th. Gained 11 places in the rankings.

Global Corporate Challenge:

My average steps for Week 3 at the GCC was 27,716 which equates to 18 km. This is a decrease of 3,659 steps per day over the previous week. The step count includes bike kilometres and is the average reported by GCC.

Another short week on the bike as I had disruptions to my riding over the weekend. Weekly average is 296 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end.

On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 101 kg. My target for the month end is 98 kg.

Helping here is my decision to get back into using Calorie King Australia.

On I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there! 224 km off the pace. Hopefully over the next two months I will get that back.

In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at I now dropped out of the Top 10 but only 18.5 km off getting back into the Top 10.

Rode from Churchlands to Deep Water Point where I met Anne for a round around the bridges plus a bit extra. After coffee I continued on to Fremantle. Was great to go riding with Anne.

AM Fremantle to Joondalup on the Look 555. A beaut ride up the coast this morning even with the wind being an ENE at 28 km/h. Being Foundation Day I took it easy, so a slow ride (my excuse anyway). Lots of people out walking and riding. Good to see folks enjoying the public holiday.

Pleasant ride down the coast heading home. Wind was S to SSE at 24 km/h.

AM Churchlands to Joondalup via the coast on the Look 555: Late start this morning (pays to set the alarm 😳 ) so had to enjoy 41 km/h easterlies whilst riding north. Had a go at two by 20 minute intervals. First went well, second was well I think there was a second.

Had a 4WD "driver" feel the urge to tell me how to ride after I choose to claim the lane going through this roundabout. The driver seem to lack an understanding of what a narrow singled lane roundabout it, where it is appropriate to pass another vehicle and that his behaviour was the very reason I claimed the lane and held him up for all of about 10 to 15 seconds. I suspect he spent more time lecturing me 🙄 I also suspect he has no idea at all what the WA Road Traffic Code is either.

I left him to it; no point in engaging with him.

AM Fremantle to Joondalup via the coast (Look 555): Bloody cold start to the ride this morning and two hours later (is there a reward for the slowest commute? 😳 ) it was still damn cold. Just didn’t warm up and I was just not getting it together at all. Felt like I had bonked before I started the ride!

All this didn’t help when in the last 15 minutes of the ride I was passing an intersection and had got to the point of being directly in front of a waiting car (due to my tiredness/cold I didn’t make eye contact with the driver) when all of a sudden she started to take off straight at me. I am like right smack bang in front of her! All I saw was bonnet and I swerved (not the smartest idea given the road is a two lane 70 km/h zone). Thankfully she was coming from a standing start and just stopped short (read centimetres) of hitting me. Scared the bejesuses out me. I am afraid I probably wasn’t that nice about it either and she was repentant and in bit of shock given she didn’t move away from the intersection immediately 😳

PM: Joondalup to Churchlands via the coast

AM June 10 Churchlands to Joondalup via the Coast – Look 555: Stomped on the pedals at 7:00 AM so by that time the temperature according to my ROX 9 was a toasty 9.3 C (others reported as low as 2.9 C early in the morning). My new "diet" (Calorie King is making very accountable 😳 ) is sapping my energy levels (I need to find the right balance I think) so the ride was a slow one again. Third slow morning ride this week. Other than that the coast was looking good. Traffic was okay, not great but okay. Wind was well a headwind as per normal, ENE 28 km/h.

PM: Joondalup to Churchlands via the coast on the Look 555.
