Life on the Road in 2010 – Week 25

The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general.  My week runs from Thursday to Friday, so Week 25 for 2010 is from June 18, 2010 through to June 24, 2010.

Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,563 steps equals 1 km. The Challenge officially started on May 20, 2010.

Date Exercise Comments
Totals for the Week Total Bike Kilometres:398 km for the week;
7,612 km for the year.

Weight:

96.3 kg; Lost 0.2 kg during the week.
Total weight loss for 2010: 6.7 kg.

BikeJournal Rankings:

Australian Cycling Forums Club – 8th. Gained three places in the rankings.

BikeJournal overall ranking – 110th. Gained one place in the rankings.

Global Corporate Challenge:

My average steps for Week 3 at the GCC was 31,426 which equates to 20 km. The step count includes bike kilometres and is the average reported by GCC.

A good week on the bike until Thursday when mechanical failure disrupted my riding. Was good to get an Audaxride in on the weekend.  Weekly average is 304 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end.On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 96.3 kg. My target for the month end is 98 kg so pleased to have ticked off that goal. Now to ensure that I don’t get back there.

Helping here is my decision to get back into using Calorie King Australia.

On BikeJournal.com I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there! 154 km off the pace. Hopefully over the next two months I will get that back.

In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at BikeJournal.com I now back in the Top 10 in ninth position. Only just but.

AM Churchlands to Joondalup via the Freeway on the Surly LHT (loaded front panniers): Managed to get away by 6:00 AM this morning for a change. Amazing what getting organised the night before does :). Really enjoyed this ride this morning in the dark for most of it. Quiet streets, quiet paths only to be disturbed once by a ride with a headlamp who felt shining the light directly into my eyes was a smart move on a blind corner. The wind was well the wind, a moderate headwind from the NE at 20 km/h.PM Joondalup to Churchlands via the coast on the Surly LHT (loaded front panniers).
Saturday, June 19, 2010 107 km on the bike

Audax ride in the hills of Perth. Starting at and finishing Kalamunda, we rode down and north across Toodyay Road, taking in the outskirts of Walyunga National Park, before circling south through Mundaring back to Kalamunda.
Sunday, June 20, 2010 48 km on the bike
0 km running
5.37 km walking
Rode from Churchlands to Deep Water Point where I joined up with Anne to ride to Mt Henry Bridge then back to the Narrows. After coffee we rode back to Deep Water Point. From Deep Water Point I rode on my own back to Fremantle.
Monday, June 21, 20103 74 km on the bike

5.24 km walking
AM: Not too bad temperature wise, around 10 C when I left Fremantle but the wind of course swung ENE and peaked at 22 km/h just cause I was riding north 🙂 Traffic was pretty good bar the two vehicles who ran the lights. I had stopped when the first one went through at the end of the orange cycle and the second one just went through the red. Both could have stopped safely. Makes you wonder. Other than that good riding with only a few cyclists out and about.PM: Joondalup to Churchlands via the coast on the Look 555.
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 60 km on the bike
0 km running
6.46 km walking
AM: Churchlands to Joondalup – Coast – Look 555. Took three attempts to get out the door this morning … so much for being organised. Mind you it meant I met up with a front end loader which allowed me a draft down West Coast Highway. There was a nice warm draught from the radiator as well 🙂 Made the ride :)PM: Had the wind in my favour tonight; WNW 39 km/h but I just didn’t seem to make the most of it. Lacked focus for sure.
Wednesday, June 23, 2010 21 km on the bike

4.28 km walking
Churchlands to Fremantle in the wind and rain. Not nice.
Thursday, June 24, 2010 37 km on the bike
0 km running
8.04 km walking
AM Fremantle to Joondalup (Mullaloo) – coast – Look 555: When I left Fremantle at around 6:00 AM ish the temperature was apparently 0.9 C (min was 0.4 C about 20 minutes earlier) at Jandakot. Didn’t feel that cold at Fremantle. Ride went smoothly until Mullaloo when it went BANG. Taxi took me the reminder of my commute to Joondalup. I was cruising along passing the Mullaloo Tavern when bang my rear derailleur hanger broke. There ended my ride. $20 for the taxi and $50 for the hanger …

9635 kg! No wonder your bike went bang!

On a ‘lighter’ note (haha), how did you go in the hills? Did you manage a faster time without me slowing you down?

I must admit that I found that ride quite challenging (although I was rather ill at the time) but it still was not as hard as dambusters.

LOL. Fixed that typo 🙂 Slightly faster time. My controlled eating plan still needs some work so by the time I got to Mundaring I was really suffering. After eating I found myself climbing the remaining hills about 4 to 5 km/h faster. Lesson learnt.

I hope to do the flat 200 km in week’s time.
