Life on the Road in 2010 – Week 26

The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general.  My week runs from Friday to Thursday, so Week 26 for 2010 is from June 24, 2010 through to July 1, 2010.

Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,563 steps equals 1 km. The Challenge officially started on May 20, 2010.

Date Exercise Comments
Totals for the Week Total Bike Kilometres:

324 km for the week;
7,936 km for the year.

97.3 kg; Gained 1 kg during the week.
Total weight loss for 2010: 5.7 kg.

BikeJournal Rankings:

Australian Cycling Forums Club – 8th. No change in the rankings.

BikeJournal overall ranking – 109th. Gained one place in the rankings.

A delayed start to the week on the bike due to the mechanical failure which disrupted my riding at the end of the last week.   Weekly average is 305 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end.

On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 97.3 kg. Gained a kilogram for some reason but the measurements indicating I am ever so slowly shrinking so some positive news in there somewhere.

Helping here is my decision to get back into using Calorie King Australia.

On I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there! 160 km off the pace. Hopefully over the next two months I will get that back.

In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at I now back in the Top 10 in eight position.

AM: A bit cold when I pulled out of Fremantle just after six but by the time I had crossed the Old Fremantle Traffic Bridge I was warming up nicely. Nice ride up the coast this morning, other interrupted to help out a guy north of Scarborough who had three punctures and used up his CO2. Leant him my pump. Hopefully he made the CBD okay. Was it anyone from here? Wind was from the east at 19 km/h.

PM: Joondalup to Churchlands via the coast.

AM: Had to go to the Post Office this morning so a late start; getting away 8:00 AM. According to the Sigma Sports ROX 9 the temperature was a pleasant 9.6 C so a nice ride this morning up the Freeway. A few cyclists about in the early stages and then it quieten down for the rest of the ride. Wind was from the east at 24 km/h.

PM: Wind was from the SE at around 28 km/h but still managed to get it together tonight pulling together probably my PB south on the Surly. Got in 5:53 outside my goal time so pretty happy with it all. Now will I be able to back it up in the morning? 🙂

AM: Left Freo around 6:00 AM when it was 4.9 C so comparably warm to our cousins over east 🙂 I attempted to back up my ride from last night with the hope of getting into Joondalup quicker. Alas that was not to happen. I was 9:32 outside my goal time and just over three minutes slower than last night. In my defence my northbound route is about a kilometre longer and with more climbing 🙂 Still a good ride with no hassles and the wind was ESE 17 km/h so should have helped me. Didn’t feel like it but.

PM: Wasn’t sure how I would go this evening. Feeling the pain in the legs today from upping the ante this week, but managed to make Churchlands 5:56 outside of my goal time. Considering I did this on the Surly and the wind being easterly at 28 km/h I am okay with this. All up the ride went well and wasn’t too cold at a minimum of 14.8 C.

Thursday, July 1, 2010 62 km on the bike

AM Not my best commute this morning. I was hurting from pushing myself this week plus was riding with front panniers (mind you not sure they made a big difference) and a moderate headwind didn’t help . Anyway the net outcome was being 14:15 minutes off the pace. Something to work on I guess. Minimum temperature was 6.8 C and the wind ENE 26 km/h. Always next week.

PM Joondalup to Churchlands – coast – Surly LHT: Still feeling the pain this evening but my time was only 7:34 minutes outside of my goal time, so wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Winds (SW at 17 km/h) plus panniers on the front slowed me down a little as well. Pretty much incident free run other than a close encounter with a Mazda driver who it seem didn’t understand what (a) looking means and (b) what give way means at a roundabout. She sure found out when I yelled. The look of shock on her face was priceless 🙄 Hopefully she got the message and will not be so stupid again.
