Getting There:

The start point is approximately 60 kms east of Perth via the Brookton Highway, Ashendon Road and Dale Road.

These getting there notes commence from the Gull Service Station (located at the intersection of Canning Road and Brookton Highway. Karragullen.

Head south-east on Brookton Highway for approximately 9 kms.  Not long after the distance marker "B95" turn left into Ashendon Road.  The turn-off is clearly signposted with a large brown tourist sign on the right side of the road. The sign reads "Mt Dale 17 km" and has a graphic of a camera on it.

Follow Ashendon Road for approximately four (4) kms until you reach the Dale Road intersection (T Junction with Dale Road on the right).  It is likely that Dale Road is not signposted due to vandalism, however, just prior to the intersection, a old log on the right side of the road is marked "Dale" with a arrow pointing right. This is very visible.

Enter Dale Road and follow it for approximately 13 km. Near the end of the road you will pass the Bibbulmun Track crossing (Omeo Road on the right). Keep on Dale Road, pass the recreation area on the right and then go through a metal gate into a parking area below the communication tower.  This is the starting point.

About the Walk: Mount Dale is a 546m peak in the Mount Dale Conservation Park and is the home to a communication tower.  The area is fairly rocky and the peak is substantially "protected"  by a ring of dyrandra bush.  However, the area provides some majestic views and great walking forest which consists mainly of jarrah and marri, but also includes shoak, banksia, zamia and grasstree. The area is well worth walking and peak is a must "bag"!
The Walk: The walk described here involves approximately two kilometres of off-track walking. A compass is required.

From the car park below the communications tower, head back down Mount Dale Road (where you drove in), passing the recreation area on your left. Continue on Mount Dale Road until you reach the Bibbulmun Track crossing.  Turn right on to the Bibbulmun Track to continue your northerly descent of Mount Dale.

Follow the Bibbulmun Track for approximately 4.2 km. Near this point the track passes through a rock outcrop.  The first of two tracks (marked on the map) should be visible on the left.  This track leads to Reference Tree BZ 76 2.  Turn left on to this track.

A few metres along this track, the track becomes less visible and you will be facing a patch of dyrandra (parrot bush).  To the right is a flat rocky outcrop. Head to this rocky outcrop. It is a nice morning tea spot.  This rocky outcrop is pretty much the head of  a ephemeral watercourse. Take the left side of this watercourse (on the ridge) following approximately a 160° bearing.  You should come out a forest management road at Reference Tree BB 76 2.  The reference tree is clearly visible on the edge of the road (right side, facing east). A large log lies across the watercourse which runs parallel to the road.  This log "points" to the Reference Tree.

Turn right on to the road and head in a easterly direction. Within a few metres you will reach the Bibbulmun Track crossing. An old water tank (no water) is on your left. Continue in a easterly direction on the road for approximately 900 metres until you reach a three (3) way junction.  Take the track to your immediate right.

Keep on this track for approximately 2 kms until you reach the recreation area at Reference Tree BC 76 1 (may not be locatable).  You will pass a area on your left which has been logged. The recreation area is on the right at the cross roads. Take the track to your right and then veer left on to the next track.  A few metres up this track is the recreation area (approximately 20 metres).  This is a suggested lunch spot and the starting point for the off-track ascent of Mount Dale!

From this point take a bearing on Mount Dale peak (213°).  For the next 2.2 km (to the top of Mount Dale) it is pretty much off-track through open bush, some rock scrambling and some parrot bush (fairly heavy going at this point).

On the climb there are a few false ridges.  It is suggested that you swing right on these ridges, zigzagging up the slope to minimise the up-down effect of the climb. Off course, pick-up the bearing again, once passed the ridges. On this bearing your should encounter a passable rock out crop (will require climbing) followed by dense dyrandra (parrot bush).

The dyrandra is "do-able" and once through it you will come out on to a single walk track (unmarked).  Turn left on to the track. Near the summit of Mount Dale a side track comes off on the right. Take this side track.

This track brings you out at the communication tower.  Follow the road to the left  to return you to your starting point.
