Bike News Europe is reporting that Mavic has announced a voluntary recall of its R-SYS front wheels as a precautionary safety measure.  The Australian recall notice has now been posted by Product Recalls Australia.

The French company has identified that the carbon tubular spokes of the R-SYS front wheel may break during use under certain circumstances causing the rider to lose control and possibly fall, potentially sustaining injury.

All models of Mavic R-SYS front wheels are concerned (R-SYS, R-SYS test, R-SYS Premium), whether purchased separately or as part of a bicycle. The wheels must no longer be used.

Consumers should immediately return their front wheel to a Mavic dealer. A new upgraded R-SYS front wheel will be delivered free of charge. This exchange will start from 31 March 2009. Until this date Mavic will offer a set of Aksium wheel so the customer can keep using his bike. This spare wheel doesn’t have to be returned after the consumer has received the replacing R-SYS front wheel.

Bernard Millaud, Mavic Managing Director, said: “Mavic is undertaking this voluntary, precautionary recall program because of our uncompromising commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. Our customers rightly expect our products to be of the very highest quality, and Mavic will continue to meet that expectation.”

Update March 23, 2009: A little ride report.  I rode down to the start at Kwinana on my Look 555 from Fremantle, getting there around 6:45 AM. Nice and early for the B start and early enough to get damn cold again.  Once the ride got started I settled into the ride, picking a group or two at various stages before settling into a group which had a few experienced riders in it. I pretty much stayed with them until the kick (hill) at the end of the Freeway where a few of us then dropped the group. Pacing is king :) .  Overall I averaged 35.8 km/h over the 58.92 km course. A time of 1:38 hours. Given my 2008 time, I am pretty happy with this.  After the ride I rode back to Fremantle. All up 132.84 km for the day.

There are some photos from the ride here and more ride reports in the Australian Cycling Forums.

In 2008 I completed the 60 km on my 2007 Giant CRX 1 in two hours and seven minutes at an average of 27.7 km/h and rode back to Fremantle.  This year I will be looking at riding from Fremantle to the start and then back again from Joondalup as well as looking to complete the ride under two hours and of course on my 2008 Look 555.

Being a bit of a Look tragic, I thought I would post these photos of what I understand is the new 2009 Look bike to be ridden by Cofidis, Le Credit par Telephone professional cycling team in 2009.  Hopefully a new bike model will do the trick and Cofidis will have a more successful year in 2009.

Update February 14, 2009: Added photos from the Cofidis Pro Cycling Team.
