The Perth Region incorporates Perth and the hinterland (areas within a 1/2 days drive of Perth) and includes walking areas such as Julimar Conservation Park, Walyunga National Park, Avon Valley National Park, John Forrest National Park, Darling Ranges and Dwellingup.  The purpose of this section is to build up a database of walks within the region.

NORTH OF PERTH

Coastal Plain Walk Trail

In 2003 the trail was extended with the building of the Prickly Bark campsite. The trail is now 55 km long  and includes four campsites (suggested as a 3 1/2 day walk).  The campsites are Bibbulmun Track style three sided shelters plus tent sites and fire rings.  The start of the trail is in the Yanchep National Park and the track finishes in the Melaleuca Park Nature Reserves, traversing the many natural wonders of the Swan Coastal Plain.  The Trail is located approximately 45 minutes from Perth.

EAST OF PERTH

John Forrest National Park

The John Forrest National Park is one (if not) the most popular National Parks in the Perth region.  It is very easily accessed via the Great Eastern Highway. The park is 28 kms from the centre of Perth. Within the park, their are a number of small walking trails that lead to such features as the Hovea Falls, National Park Falls, Rocky Pool, Swan View Tunnel (worth a visit!).  The main walking trail in park is the 15 km Eagle's View Trail which was built by the Perth Bushwalkers Club (and is still maintained by them).

Eagle View Trail is well marked and consists of single use walk trail and management track.  There is one fairly step ascent (clockwise) near the beginning of the trail (or end if going anti-clockwise) but otherwise the track is fairly easy going.  CALM suggests allowing up to seven hours to complete the track depending on fitness. I have completed the track at a moderate pace in approximately four hours. The track is quite pleasant, offering great views over the city from some parts.  Sadly, the eagles nest, of which the trail is named after, no longer exists. A scan of the map and track notes for a anti-clockwise completion of the track is available here. I suggest, however that you obtain a copy of the map when you register for the walk.

Maps of the walk are available at a registration point on the verandah of the rangers office in the main picnic area near the part entrance. You are expected to registered your walk both outward bound and ON RETURN.

The Park Ranger can be contacted on (08) 9298 8344 or fax (08) 9298 9426.  The nearest CALM office is Mundaring District office:

Paruna Sanctuary

Paruna Sanctuary is one of two privately owned sanctuaries in the Perth region. The other sanctuary is Karakamia Sanctuary near Chidlow.  Karakamia Sanctuary is restricted to guided walks whereas Paruna has a number of tracks (five in all), the longest being 13.4 km + lots of steps (a reasonable day walk given that the sanctuary is located in the Avon Valley region).  Access to the tracks is restricted.  You must book in advance to obtain a pin code to activate the gate.  A $5.00 per person fee is charged (as at June 2001). Further details at the Paruna Sanctuary website.
