In 2010 the City of Stirling won three Perth Bicycle Network Local Government Grants to improve cycling infrastructure within the City of Stirling. One of those grants was to install bicycle lanes on West Coast Drive between Karrinyup Road and Beach Road. Anyone who rides this section will know how important such lanes are to cyclists and in particular the high number of commuter cyclists riding West Coast Drive. So the question is, where are our bicycle lanes City of Stirling? Have you completed the other two programs you won grants for?
To find out where we are at with these grants; they have to be spent by June 30, 2011 or we lose the money, today I have written to the Mayor of the City of Stirling, Councillor David Bootham seeking a status update. If I hear back from the Mayor I will post his reply here.  [Update April 7, 2011 – Mr Jon Offer of the City Stirling responded].  In the meantime, please consider emailing or writing to Councillor Bootham seeking an update. The more pressure we put on the City of Stirling the more chance we have of getting our infrastructure. Councillor David Bootham can be emailed at boothman.David@stirling.wa.gov.au.
My letter is as follows:
Councillor David Bootham Mayor City of Stirling PO Box 1533 Osborne Park WA 6916
Dear Councillor Bootham I am writing to you in respect to the 2010-2011 Perth Bicycle Network Local Government Grants and in particular the grants awarded to the City of Stirling; namely: 1.   West Coast Drive Bicycle Lanes – Karrinyup Road to Beach Road; 2.   Scarborough Beach Bicycle Parking; 3.   Various Minor Works? Mayor my particular interest is the West Coast Drive bicycle lanes as I am a regular bicycle commuter on this road and hence I am acutely aware of the vulnerability of riding this section of road. It concerns me seriously that there is no, at least on the ground, indication that the Council is progressing the completion of these bicycles lanes. I hope Mayor that I have that wrong and that you re-assure the municipality and myself that the Council has every intention of actually completing the bicycle lanes as per its grants application. With respect to the other two grants, I am not familiar with the various minor works so it would be appreciated if you could advise how the grant has been spent and with respect to the Scarborough Beach Bicycle Parking, again can you please advise the status of the completion of this project. I look forward to your response and will be updating the readers of Aushiker.com and the members at the Australian Cycling Forums upon receipt. .
