Life on the Road – Week 19

The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general.  My week runs from Thursday to Friday, so Week 19 for 2010 is from May 7, 2010 through to May 13, 2010.

Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,560 steps equals 1 km.

Totals for the Week Total Bike Kilometres:

204 km for the week;
5,593 km for the year.

99.8 kg; Plus 600 grams.
Total weight loss for 2010: 3.0 kg.

BikeJournal Rankings:

  • Australian Cycling Forums Club – 9th. No change in the  rankings.
  • BikeJournal overall ranking – 103rd. No movement in the rankings.

Another short week on the bike as I had disruptions to my riding over the weekend. Weekly average is 294 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end.

On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 99.8 kg. My target for the month end is 98 kg.

On I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there!

In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at I have now got back into the top 10, just and still holding on, just.

AM Churchlands to Joondalup via the Freeway on the Look 555: Pulled out around 6:00 AM minus arm warmers (who has my spare pair?) so felt the chill a little bit. The bike ninjas and a dude with a very bright front light totally misaligned reminded me why I much prefer the coastal route. The guy with the very bright light turned out to be connected to a dog; except the dog was not visible until I was less than a metre from him due to the light! Lets just say it was close.

Noon Joondalup to Churchlands via the Coast on the Look 555. Funny ride, not much motivation. My creaking saddle was really spoiling the ride so that didn’t help. To add to this three people decided to test how close they could turn right on me without actually hitting me. What really got me was two of them didn’t have the decency to even acknowledge me or their stupidity despite my yelling and their body language showing they really knew what they done. Quite pathetic really. Do they think that this makes it all okay. At least one reacted and abused me for yelling at him when he started to turn right into me (no indicator either). Nice to know that riding straight and correctly on West Coast Drive warrants being abused. Now where was Citywomble’s friendly police officer? Oh I know, hassling well behaved cyclists on the dual use path… hell much more important that drivers actually obeying the law, right? There ends my rant.

Quite a pleasant late ride into the office this overcast morning with the wind at around 28 km/h from the ESE. Did cop one "Get on the footpath" comment from the passenger in a Holden Commodore. Just ignored him. Other than that the traffic was good. Oh one girl did manage to take out the island trying to pass me … she backed off after that little frightener 🙂

Perth May 11 PM Joondalup to Fremantle on the Look 555. Wind was a 11 km/h easterly. Side winds are nearly as much a pain at times as headwinds I think. Overall the ride was pretty straightforward, half in daylight half in the dark. Nothing exciting happened.

Perth May 12 AM Fremantle to Joondalup on the Look 555. Half an hour late getting started this morning which turned out to be a bit of a bonus. I missed the worst of the trucks on Tydeman Road, shared the path at Scarborough with a bunch of school girls out for a run, found a small change to my route which will cut out some path riding heading north (how I missed this option for so long is beyond me) and I saw a karma moment. This was the highlight. I reported a section of broken glass on West Coast Drive a couple of days ago and this morning there was the road sweeper doing its thing and behind the road sweeper was a queue of cars and I mean a queue. Maybe 50 + cars. Sadly I doubt any of them would have go it but … if you litter … Still it was a good look. Gave the road sweeper dude a friendly wave 🙂 Oh the wind was from the NNE at 28 km/h. It hurt.

Perth PM Joondalup to Churchlands via the Freeway on the Look 555. Left work "late" today so road home in the dark. First chance to get a decent ride in with the Fenix L2D on the helmet. Felt it didn’t add any value and so will put it back on the bars. Other than that the ride was pretty uneventful. Oh, wind was from the south, gusting to 43 km/h.
