Life on the Road in 2010 – Week 21

The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general.  My week runs from Thursday to Friday, so Week 21 for 2010 is from May 21, 2010 through to May 27, 2010.

Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,563 steps equals 1 km. The Challenge officially started on May 20, 2010.

Totals for the Week Total Bike Kilometres:

209 km for the week;
6,003 km for the year.

99.8 kg; No change.
Total weight loss for 2010: 3.0 kg.

BikeJournal Rankings:

Australian Cycling Forums Club – 13th. Dropped one place in the rankings.

BikeJournal overall ranking – 131th. Dropped 14 places in the rankings.

Global Corporate Challenge:

Averaged 20,117 steps per day this week, which equates to 13 km. The step count includes bike kilometres and is the average reported by the GCC,

Another short week on the bike as I had disruptions to my riding over the weekend. Weekly average is 286 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end.

On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 99.8 kg. My target for the month end is 98 kg.

On I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there! 267 km off the pace. Hopefully over the next two months I will get that back.

In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at I now dropped out of the Top 10. Damn!

Two rides today:

1. Rode into the city to pick up our HBF Fun Run Participation Packs. Fun negotiating around all the construction going on. Had to walk some sections.
2. Churchlands to Fremantle via the River on the Look 555. Left late so this was an all in the dark ride to Fremantle. All went well but did catch the first of the rain a bit as I was coming into North Fremantle. Bet the worse of it but.

Had planned to ride with the Freo Wheelers, but woke up to rain, wimped out and went back to sleep.

Completed the 2010 HBF Run for a Reason 14 km course in 2:35 with Anne including a 10 minute loo stop which cost us about 1,000 places in the rankings!

Fremantle to Joondalup via the coast on the Look 555. I was a little concerned about this mornings ride given I completed the HBF Run for a Reason yesterday but thankfully one uses different muscles when walking/running than cycling or so it seems (well I could ride but hardly walk :). To add to the ride plus points the rain from the weekend had moved on and the wind was at least for the first half hour in my favour before it swung to the east at up to 22 km/h. Still I decided early on in the ride to get on the big chain ring and to see how it went. Worked out okay but my cadence was down a bit. Still over an enjoyable peaceful ride to work this morning.

Joondalup to Fremantle on the Look 555. Pulled out of Joondalup about 15 minutes before dark so the ride was pretty much all in the dark. Wind was WSW at 13 km/h when I left but for the last hour was calm at 0 km/h. A real nice change! Took a slightly different route from normal which provides a safer entry to one of my two bad roundabouts. I think I will stick with this variation now. Mind you it cuts of 4 km from the ride. Traffic was good, bicycles not so good. Two riders without lights and one stupid girl who thought it was funny to run the red light just as I was about to enter the intersection. She wouldn’t have found it funny if I had taken her out … 🙄 Oh saw RolandP too at Scarborough … 🙂

Fremantle to Joondalup via the coast on the Look 555. Slept in and left late (there are some perks with this job :)) and had to deal with the increased traffic around North Fremantle. Not a good look. From there it was pretty straight forward riding into a headwind, north-east at 28 km/h this morning. At least it was fine and not too cold.

Joondalup to Churchlands via the Freeway on the Look 555. Semi-dry ride home into SW winds gusting up to 69 km/h. Fun 🙂 As I was short of wet weather gear (forgot to take it to the office in the morning) I decided to try out TooLongLegs idea of glad wrap around the shoes to keep them dry. I don’t think I did that greater job of it but it still worked quite well. I think with better wrapping and maybe just wrapping the shoe itself (not around the ankle or wrapping the ankle area separately) it will work well for me.
