A recent posting on the London Cyclist got me thinking about what do we commute on here in Australia and more specifically Perth. Do we commute on folders? high end carbon roadies? Hybrids? What do you commute on? Let us know via the comments below.
For me, my commuting predominately is on my Giant CRX 1 flatbar which I hope to convert to a dropbar. I have yet to properly winterise the bike for next winter but will do that. On some days I go with my Look 555 but really the flatbar is the one for me.
It is set up with DiNotte 400L lights on the front, Radbot 1000s on the rear and has a rear rack for handling my panniers when I need them. Just needs to be faster 🙂
So what do you ride?
For the past three weeks I have been commuting on a 21 year old Cro-Mo Mountain bike with full off road tyres. It’s actually pretty comfortable with the fat tyres soaking up most of the bumps. I only have a short commute (9km) so I can afford to push a bit harder. It makes my regular bike feel very light and fast.
I commute on my Surly LHT, mudguards, dynamo driven lights, panniers. Probably a bit overkill, but despite being (much) heavier than my Cannondale roadie, it’s much more convenient.
Orbea AOS FB roadie with 35mm semi-slick tires. Running a Zefal Swan rear mudguard and a planet bike light set, with a few cheap DX LED lights as backups.
Pretty comfortable and easy to ride, my main commute is 4.2KM each way to Uni and 8.5KM each way to work so not a long distance.
Looking to get a rack and panniers in the future for carrying groceries/clothes etc. Currently using a 24lt Osprey Stratos which is a hiking day back with an “aircore” to keep your back cool, but it still get sweaty and the weight balance is annoying with a loaded bag.
🙂
