Topeak Journey Bicycle Trailer – A Sneak Look

It appears that in 2011 Topeak will be joining the ranks of touring bicycle trailer manufacturers and going into compete against the well established BOB range of trailers. I have the BOB Ibex for example.  At the time of posting there is no details on the Journey at Topeak’s website so this information is courtesy of

The core specifications of the Topeak Journey which does look at first glance a lot like a BOB Yak are:

  • Trailer features rugged and lightweight TwinSpar frame design
  • 16″ wheel includes fender for weather protection
  • Rear fender features a light clip fitting
  • A safety flag keeps rider visible
  • Waterproof material is sonically welded and seam sealed for durable, waterproof protection
  • DryBag roll top closure provide complete protection from the elements
  • Carrying handle for off trailer use.

The key difference is the hitching mechanism.  On the Topeak Journey the trailer hitches to the bicycle slideLock fittings as opposed to the pin/retaining rivet system in use in more recent versions of the BOB trailers. It will be interesting to see how the plastic (?) hitch components last on a tourer or three.
