CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE – City of Fremantle Responds Re 2010-2011 PBN Local Government Grants

On March 25, 2011 I wrote to the Mayor of the City of Fremantle, Dr Brad Pettitt, with regards to the status of the Perth Bicycle Network Local Government Grants received by the City of Fremantle in 2010.  I received a reply this week from Dr Pettitt. It is an interesting contrast to the reply I received from the City of Stirling on matter of their 2010-2011 Perth Bicycle Network Local Government Grants.

It is good to read in Dr Pettittt’s letter that the Mather Road Shared Use Path is substantially completed and to read that the Parry Street bike lanes are progressing. This later item is interesting as the City of Stirling seems to have issues with its intention to install bike lanes on West Coast Drive.  Why is Main Roads supporting one project (assuming the veracity of Jon Offer’s statements) and not another?

On the downside it is disappointing that end-of-trip facilities are not valued by the City of Fremantle with the withdrawal of support for the Leisure Centre Facility.  It seems that we get the paths and road infrastructure but nothing when you get to your destination.  Imagine the reaction if the Council did the same with car parking! That is put in the roads but not the parking. A balanced approach is needed and I hope the City of Fremantle re-thinks its approach. infrastructure.

For your reading pleasure, Dr Pettitt’s reply is posted below.
