RIDE REPORT: Audax Ride – Dog Leg Loop – April 2011 – 100 km

Seven of us braved the north-easterly winds which where gusting well over 30 km/h to take on the 100 km Dog Leg Loop, a flat Audax ride to the south of Perth and my second Audax ride for 2011.

When we reached the Shell Petrol Station on Thomas Road, two riders turned around as they where completing the 50 km loop and five of us continued on south to complete the dog leg part of the ride; exploring the rather dry lands around the Baldvis area. Other than the wind which was sometimes in our favour and other times not, the ride was pleasant but uneventful until we where heading north once again on the Kwinana Freeway Principal Shared Path (PSP).

First “event” was my decision to take a nature stop just after returning to the PSP. It turns out I shared my stop with a Dugite! A medium sized one who thankfully decided to not share the moment with me 🙂
The second “event” was a lot sadder. On our return, as we neared Thomas Road, we ran into a Police road block and had to take a detour bringing us out on the PSP north at Anketell Road.  The Police had blocked off the PSP as a cyclist had been killed early in the morning.  There is some discussion of the incident in the Australian Cycling Forums.
So besides these events it was a good ride south with a nice challenge thrown in by the wind for the return to Deep Water Point. Thanks to Ross and Audax WA for organising the ride.
