Carradice Barley Saddle Bag with SQR System Owner Review

I purchased the Carradice Barley saddle bag and SQR System quick release mount from Wiggle in April 2011 but had a bit of a wait for the bag and a SQR block which was missing from the SQR System mount kit. Thanks to Carradice I was able to eventually get things sorted out and now have the Barley saddle bag fitted to the Kinesis Racelight Granfondo LTD. The Kinesis is my commuter and the idea is the Barley will replace my need to wear a back pack on my day to day commutes. I also had to get the SQR System as the Brooks Team Pro saddle I use lacks bag loops and the Barley needs loops to be mounted.

First impressions after the first week or so of riding with the bag are pretty positive. The SQR System was quick and easy to mount and it holds the bag well, but a little close to the rear of the saddle. I initially thought this would bother me but already after a week or so I am forgetting it is there.

The Barley itself seems well made and the styling is really great … just seems to work for me. The bag is spacious and the two side pockets hold my “bike gear” well.

Carradice Barley fitted to my Look 555

October 20, 2011: Based on my experience the Barley I purchased a second SQR Block, a large one, which I have fitted to my Look 555 so that I can use the Barley on 200 km + Audax rides where the Look is my bike of preference.

I have also scanned and upload to Dropbox a copy of the Carradice Barley Saddle Bag fitting instructions and the SQR System fitting instructions. Just click on the links to open or download the related PDF files.

Thanks for the article Andrew – is your Look seat post carbon? I have a Team Pro & looking at the Barley too, just wondering whether I can simply feed the saddlebag straps around the seat post rails instead of using the SQR as would prefer not to clamp anything onto my carbon seat post – cheers Andrew, Audax Tasmania

Hi Andrew. Yes the Look does have carbon seat post. It hasn’t bothered me so far thankfully 🙂

You might get away with using straps on the seat post rails. I haven’t tried it but.

After a bit more web trawling I’m now thinking of using the Super C Audax bag (same 9L volume as Barley) and Cyclo loops.

Sounds good. I had a look at my Barley as it comes it wouldn’t mount the way you where considering.

Thanks for your suggestions but with my Brooks I don’t have the bag loops.
