OWNER REVIEW: Pearl Izumi Select Gel Gloves

Pearl Izumi Select Gel Gloves

Pearl Izumi Select Gel gloves

I purchased a pair of Pearl Izumi Select Gel gloves from Chain Reaction Cycles in March 2011 as they where on special and I thought why not give these a shot. They cost me a whole $11.00. I suspect they where 2009 or 2010 models being cleared out. I do notice that Pearl Izumi still list this model of glove in 2011, just in different colours. These are gel gloves and so for me work best on my bikes which have thinner bar tape. On my Kinesis Racelight Granfondo I find my gel-less gloves much more comfortable and these gloves, the Pearl Izumi ones a bit too thick.

This feeling of thickness comes about because the gel padding is quite substantive compared to other “cheaper” gloves that I have or have tried. The front of the gloves have four gel pads proving a good level of support. In addition the front appears to be made of a leather style of material. Pearl Izumi in respect to the 2011 gloves describe this material as Clarino™, a synthetic leather is soft and durable. So far my gloves have been durable for sure.

The back of the glove is more of a mesh type of material which provides a degree of sun protection and reduces heat and sweat build up.

The gloves have a hook and loop closure and what Pearl Izumi describe as an “Easy-Off Glove Removal Tab.” I find the tab so small as to be useless and never use it.

In summary I have found the gloves comfortable, the sizing is comfortable (I went with my normal size of large and this was spot on) and they are wearing well. I do rotate through my gloves and I do wash them after each ride. That said these gloves would be used at least once a week.

Would I buy them again? At $11.00 for sure; at $30.00 probably not. I don’t think they perform that good to warrant a premium price tag.
