I have just got back from a relaxing six nights in Bali, Indonesia with Anne. We stayed at the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences which is actually in Tegallalang about 20 to 30 minutes drive north of Ubud.
If you are into getting away from it all, if you enjoy the sounds of nature, then the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences is the place for you. It is a small group of 14 villas located on the banks of the Tukad Mas river, so you are surrounded by the tropical forest (no paddy fields) and share the sounds of the flowing river and all that live in the forest with you.It is an amazing location on the banks of the fast flowing Tukad Mas River, you share the sounds of the river and forest wildlife through your stay.
We stayed in a villa, Villa Bima Dua (Villa Bima Two) which is one that over looks the river and forest. This meant we could sit on our balcony taking in the vista and sounds and smells of the tropical forest which where simply stunning. Of course the sound of the river was always there. Something to keep in mind if you are light sleeper.
Villa Bima Dua at the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences
Villa Bima Dua at the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences is for couples. It has a large bedroom/lounge space that includes a four poster king sized bed, divan and work desk as well as coffee and tea making facilities.
There is also a separate bathroom with vanity unit, shower and a large bath. That is no outside bathroom here. The only downside is the toilet is in an open space; no privacy on the throne so to speak.
The bed overlooks the balcony and out in to the river jungle. The balcony is wide running the full length of the front of the villa. It has two arm chairs, a side table and another divan to lay on. All up a great space for relaxing and taking in the smells and sounds of the forest.
The villa also came with a TV and DVD player. Handy for watching those cheap Bali DVDs one tends to buy.
Coming back to the resort itself, the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences has a small bar alongside a small dining room which in turn over looks the infinity swimming pool which over looks the river valley.
There is also a smaller pool and getaway from it all place with cocktail bar and spa at the lowest level of the complex. Read here lots of steps as it is down near the river.
To assist those who find the walking up and down to much Alam Ubud Villas & Residences does have a couple of golf buggies which they use for numerous tasks including transporting guests up and down from their villas.
At this lowest level of the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences the scared Pol spring is found. The spring water is claimed to “cause young and cure skin disease.” Anne has sensitive skin which easily reacts to chemicals and the like. She tested the water and found a rash that she had quickly clear up so maybe there is something in the water to support the claim.
Our preference was to use the lower level pool as it was our secret getaway so to speak as no one else seemed interested in going down there.
As we stayed six nights at the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences we also go a free one hour massage as well as a 1/2 hour foot massage. The spa service is very good and is recommended. Oh, Alam Ubud also provide a complimentary laundry service, allowing three pieces of clothing to be washed and ironed each day.
Bicycles Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences
Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences also has some bicycles or as a cyclist I would refer to them as bicycle shaped objects (BSO) for the free use of guests. We did take a couple out for a short ride around Alam Ubud. As Alam Ubud is located on the side of the river valley, the ridge is not that wide before the local roads quickly descend. Therefore our little excursion was short but enjoyable. Probably long enough given the bicycles 🙂
The small niggles with the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences
- Maybe not really a niggle, but whilst the food was reasonable the pricing was a bit rich and the menu choice was limited. Breakfast was good but again limited.
- Lack of toilet privacy in the room
- If you are concerned about lots of steps and I mean lots of steps then this is also a downside. That said a golf buggy is on hand to ease some of the pain going up and down to your villa.
Summary perspective of Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences
The small niggles not withstanding, we really really enjoyed our stay at the Alam Ubud Culture Villas & Residences and will be back for sure. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the size, the location and the whole feel of the resort really worked for us.
To cap off our visit, our regular Bali driver Rejun was as always so helpful and considerate. We can highly recommend Rejun. If you contact him in advance he will pick you from the airport if you are heading back to Ubud. Rejun’s phone number is +62 813 3741 9961. Just let him know that Anne and Andrew said to call. Â Please keep in mind Rejun is based in Ubud so really only available for picking up around Bali to take you back to Ubud and of course to other places from Ubud and for other travel with a Ubud base.
On one of our trips with Rejun into Ubud we went pass the local village’s Ogoh-Ogoh and a less ceremonial artistic endeavour.
By the way this village is really into cats given the amount of cat related artwork.
We came across a second Ogoh-Ogoh on our way to the Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport on our last day.
