Efneo Front Crankset – Alternative to a Schlumpf Drive?

Working through my build specifications for a Sinner Mango Sports Red Edition and also the possibility of a Surly Ogre, one option being considered is a Schlumpf High Speed Drive on the Sinner Mango. However a Schlumpf is not cheap, more so if you add in a Rohloff rear hub to the mix so coming across the Efneo is a bonus.

The Efneo looks promising as a possible alternative to the Schlumpf drives. At this stage it looks like one option in the Efneo range but it is start. It will be interested to if this development goes further and if there is a KickStarter funding option. If interested one can drop Efneo an email to be kept informed of future developments.

Efneo’s Features

  • Light and compact – much less than 1 kg weight and 20 mm width
  • Changes gears while stationary and while pedalling – quickly and smoothly
  • Easy reduction to lowest gear at halt – like changing to 1st gear in a car
  • Convenient gears ratios: neutral, +36%, +38% (188% as a whole) – equivalent to 24T/33T/45T in front derailleur

    cool, im looking at buying / building a belt drive bike for touring – i wonder if they will make a belt drive option 🙂

      If you are looking at a belt drive, you might want to have a look at the Patterson Crankset which is manufactured by FSA. FSA do an adaptor for the Patterson which allows it take a belt.

    There’s a few ways to do gearing, and it’s interesting that they’ve elected gear 1 instead of 2 to be the 1:1 ratio. Most other 3sp systems will make gear 2 the 1:1 ratio because it’s simpler to implement the planetary gearing system. The advantage of this is your climbing gear is the most efficient. The downside is your cruising gears of 2 and 3 are less efficient, which might be really, really noticeable in the top end, depending on the quality of the materials used. I would be really interested in the weight and efficiency ratings for this, as to me, that’s what makes or breaks a product like this, ESPECIALLY efficiency.

    For what it’s worth I did end up dropping the cash on a Rohloff hub, and received it 3 days ago. It’s configured to give a cruising speed of 24-30 km/h, and I really, really like it, way more responsive than I ever thought it would be (I previously had a SRAM Inter-3 that was really, really lossy).       Good to hear you are happy with the Rohloff so far. It seems that at present the Schlumpf Drives are really my only option if I go down that path with a Rohloff given the ratio restrictions that Rohloff put in place.
