Specialized Bicycles Recalled – Tarmac SL4, Crux and Secteur Disk

Specialized Tarmac Expert SL4

One of the numerous Specialized Tarmac SL4 models subject to the recall

Product Recalls Australia in co-operation with Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc have recalled three models of Specialized bicycles: 2012 and 2013 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Crux and 2013 Secteur Disk due to a safety issue with the models.  The bicycles’ steer tube in the front fork are faulty which can lead to the steerer tube breaking. Not a nice problem to have with your bike.

Specialized Crux Elite

One variant of the Specialized Crux models recalled due to the steerer tube fault

A broken steerer tube is not a good look when one is riding a bicycle so if you brought one of these models between July 1, 2011 and January 29, 2013 you should stop riding your bike and return it to your Specialized bicycle retailer to have the fault rectified. If you have registered your details with Specialized you should receive a postcard from them which entitles you to a $100 store credit towards the purchase of Specialized branded merchandise when you return your bike for rectification of the fault. A nice little compensator for the hassle.

It seems that this steer tube fault is not limited to Specialized with WIller also recalling one its models, the Izoard XP. Specialized is also not having a good run with its Globe Elite model being recalled previously for a similar issue and its 2011 Sirrus, Vita and Tricross models also being recalled for issues with their forks.  The forks are manufactured by Topkey, of Taiwan so are likely the same forks made for the other bicycle brands.  Interestingly the Specialized frames (bicycles) are manufactured by Merida Industry Co. Ltd., of Taiwan according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall notice for the the Specialized bicycles.

If you want more information on the recall you can contact Specialized via its website.
