Austroads Ltd has released a report providing data on what they refer to as “key fatal and serious crash types in Australia and New Zealand” covering the period 2001 to 2010.
From a bicycle riders perspective there is little information of direct value in the report.
Figure 3.18 and Figure 3.19 in the report provide some data on casualties in Australia and New Zealand by vehicle type from 2006 to 2010 but that is really about it. In Australia during this time there 13,421 crashes involving bicycles classified as “other”; 5,840 classified as “serious” and 159 as “fatal.”
It would be helpful if quality data was provided on bicycle rider crashes so we could get a better understanding of what is occurring and where to direct resources to reduce the injury and death rates.
