The Honourable Dean Nalder, Western Australian Transport Minister has announced [June 18, 2015] that as a result of the 2015 Cycling Imagineering Workshop “a further $3 million had been allocated to see some of the actions implemented.” Thus the question is this a real tangible benefit to cycling in Western Australia?
As this is an additional $3 million I am assuming this in addition to any funds budgeted for in the 2015-2016 WA State government budget so what are we getting from this additional $3 million?
The Minister goes on to say in his press release that some actions to be progressed include:
- considering new ways to deliver cycling education programs to children and adults
- reviewing width requirements for the major shared cycle/pedestrian paths on the freeway and railway reserves and around the river
- the need to separate cyclists and pedestrians in some locations.
So what I see from this is $3 million to be spent on more “considering,” money being spent on “reviewing,” and the third dot pot, the third big spend item is, well I am not sure what it is. So I am struggling to see what the “reality” is about this big outcome. Not one real infrastructure project has been highlighted in the minister’s statement either specifically or in more general terms, e.g., widening of paths as opposed to “reviewing.”
